This mind mapping tool helps you with learning and planning.

What can I use it for?

You can use this mind mapping software as a visual way of learning topics or as a planning tool for written work. Images and links to resources can be added and once you have finalised your plan this can be exported into Word so you have a ready made template to write into.

Cost? It is available for use on all QMUL computers, so free! Or you can purchase a yearly subscription for a personal computer from $20 a month.

What does it do?

This mind mapping tool allows you to create mind maps and flow charts that you can add text and images to and link videos and websites. Mind maps can be downloaded as PDFs.

What can I use it for?

Use this tool when planning assignments and revising. It helps you to get ideas down and draw links between concepts. The colour coding feature and the ability to add images and videos also provides a great visual overview of the information.

Cost? You can sign up for free and have access to 3 private diagrams and as many public diagrams as you like. Or for $5 a month you can have access to unlimited private diagrams.

Visual Timer – Countdown (Android only)

What does it do?

This timer app gives users a visual representation of time passing. It allows you to set a timer to complete tasks with a visual and numerical countdown to help keep you focused and develop an understanding of the passage of time.

What can I use it for?

You can set a timer for one-off tasks or pre-programme a timer for activities you do regularly.

Google Calendar

What does it do?

It allows you to keep track of appointments and deadlines.

What can I use it for?

You can use this app to add times, dates and places for appointments and attach images and maps. You can also create revision timetables and set reminders for assessment deadlines.

Forest

What does it do?

Forest is a motivational time management app that stops you using your phone by blocking access to other apps and websites you put on your blacklist for a fixed amount of time. The app grows trees all the time you are not using your phone and you can save your progress so that eventually you have a full forest.

What can I use it for?

Forest helps you combat procrastination and distraction, and be present to your study and your learning. The timer feature allows you to break your study into discrete chunks. If you are easily distracted by notifications, news, social media and the like, this app is particularly motivating because it turns your bad online habits into a game where you can grow time management skills.

Cost? £1.99 (in-app purchases also available, allowing you to be environmentally-conscious and grow real trees!)

Scapple

What does it do?

An intuitive mind mapping software which helps with getting an overview on a piece of research and then plan the write up. Works in conjunction with Scrivener.

What can I use it for?

Use it for getting initial research ideas down and organising your thoughts and ideas in one place when planning or writing an essay, dissertation or thesis. Mind mapping is also a great way of getting an overview on any topic which you are trying to learn or to make your revision more visual and interactive.

Cost? a one-off subscription fee of £13 (student/academic price)

Scrivener

What does it do?

It’s a writing app designed to aid anyone research, plan and write a substantial written project, from dissertations to novels.

What can I use it for?

You can use it to store large volumes of research and resources to which you can add notes and tags for a quick reference system. Particularly helpful for PhD students or any large written project such as a dissertation. Enables you to organise topics/chapters and to get an overview on particular research topics through use of the “corkboard function”. It’s a way of storing and organising notes all in one place, whilst researching making it easier to write them up afterwards

Cost? A one-off charge of £39.95 (student/academic price)

Google Keep

What does it do? Organisation tool, you can add notes, photos and audio to keep. Includes a post it note system.

What can I use it for? Useful for tracking and keeping on top of all tasks, from personal to academic life. You can create lists to tick off when completed as well as adding details about times, dates and places where needed. These can also be shared with others which can help with accountability. There is a tagging and colour coding system to enable distinction between personal and academic tasks and you can archive lists when completed but they are not completely lost in case you need to go back to them. Google Keep can be synced across devices to enable on the go editing.

Habit Minder

What does it do? Aims to help you form healthy habits and keep you accountable through useful tools. It can be beneficial for time management, productivity and increasing general well being.

What can I use it for? Helps you to build positive habits and set and reach your goals. Enables you to track your progress and add a reward system when you meet your targets.

Cost? It’s free! Premium subscriptions available to purchase.

Focus at Will

What does it do? Offers music that is aimed to help you focus better through timed intervals. It creates a personal concentration playlist, can reduce distraction and increase productivity.

What can I use it for? You can build a personal playlist of music which helps you with productivity and it enables you to track what works to help build this up. The music is lyric free and is designed to change at certain intervals to keep you focussed.

Cost? Free trial (1 week), subscriptions start at $30 per year.
