What does it do?

It enables you to asses your presentation skills, whether your pace is suitable and detects if you are talking for too long on one slide, or simply reading the slide out loud.

What can I use it for?

A great tool to improve your presentation skills and ensure that you are engaging your audience and not just reading the slides aloud. You can also ensure that your timings work for the task in hand. You can practise for class presentations and get immediate feedback all of which will help improve your confidence.

Quizlet

What does it do?

It allows you to make flashcards for learning and revision purposes and search/edit existing sets created by other users.

What can I use it for?

Flashcards are a great way to improve and test information recall for learning and revision. You can auto-generate a range of activities from the set of flashcards you have created to test yourself e.g. a multiple choice test, so you can match it to the style of exam suitable for your course.

Cost? Basic account free or £19.99 per year for Quizlet Plus which allows you to customise flashcards further.

Brainscape

What does it do?

Its a site which enables the creation of flashcards for learning and revision purposes which can be shared across devices. You can also search for existing flashcards and share what you create with others.
When testing yourself, after you reveal the answer for each flashcard, you rate your knowledge from 1-5 and your next revision session will focus on the topics you feel less confident with, allowing for more effective, focused revision.

What can I use it for?

You can use it to learn new topics or revise for exams in a more fun and multi-sensory way, rather than just writing out notes. It is super easy to test yourself and build on the areas which you need more help with and avoid the temptation of just focusing on the familiar areas.

Mendeley

What does it do?

It allows you to create a library of sources from online texts and import documents from your computer.  Citations and a bibliography can be inserted into work with a few clicks.  It provides references in a number of formats including Harvard, APA, Vancouver and OSCOLA.

You can also search for scientific research papers and receive personalised recommendations.

There is an added perk of being able to search for jobs in the science, technology and health fields.

What can I use it for?

You can to search for, collect, organise and cite research and build your own personal library for essay writing or learning.

The additional function of PDF annotating means that you can sticky notes and information, so no more printing out piles of journal articles to make notes on!

You can also search for job opportunities and search for funding opportunities for scientific research

Zotero

What does it do?

This programme allows you to find details of sources (title, publication date, author etc) simply through typing in an ISBN, DOI or PMID search or saving directly from your web browser. You can collate a source library for each assignment and then insert citations and/or a bibliography into your work with a few clicks.  It provides references in a number of formats including Harvard, APA, Vancouver and OSCOLA.

You can sync it across all your devices so you can keep all your resources organised and in one place.

What can I use it for?

You can very easily collect, organise and cite research in your essays with a couple of clicks. The best feature is the bibliography creator; once you have finished your essay, with a couple of clicks, you can insert all the references you’ve used in alphabetical order using the style of referencing you have selected, easy! No more searching through your work to make sure you have included all your references and manually typing them all out.
