This mind mapping tool helps you with learning and planning.

What can I use it for?

You can use this mind mapping software as a visual way of learning topics or as a planning tool for written work. Images and links to resources can be added and once you have finalised your plan this can be exported into Word so you have a ready made template to write into.

Cost? It is available for use on all QMUL computers, so free! Or you can purchase a yearly subscription for a personal computer from $20 a month.

What does it do?

This mind mapping tool allows you to create mind maps and flow charts that you can add text and images to and link videos and websites. Mind maps can be downloaded as PDFs.

What can I use it for?

Use this tool when planning assignments and revising. It helps you to get ideas down and draw links between concepts. The colour coding feature and the ability to add images and videos also provides a great visual overview of the information.

Cost? You can sign up for free and have access to 3 private diagrams and as many public diagrams as you like. Or for $5 a month you can have access to unlimited private diagrams.

Scapple

What does it do?

An intuitive mind mapping software which helps with getting an overview on a piece of research and then plan the write up. Works in conjunction with Scrivener.

What can I use it for?

Use it for getting initial research ideas down and organising your thoughts and ideas in one place when planning or writing an essay, dissertation or thesis. Mind mapping is also a great way of getting an overview on any topic which you are trying to learn or to make your revision more visual and interactive.

Cost? a one-off subscription fee of £13 (student/academic price)

Scrivener

What does it do?

It’s a writing app designed to aid anyone research, plan and write a substantial written project, from dissertations to novels.

What can I use it for?

You can use it to store large volumes of research and resources to which you can add notes and tags for a quick reference system. Particularly helpful for PhD students or any large written project such as a dissertation. Enables you to organise topics/chapters and to get an overview on particular research topics through use of the “corkboard function”. It’s a way of storing and organising notes all in one place, whilst researching making it easier to write them up afterwards

Otter AI

What does it do?

It records and transcribes audio.

What can I use it for?

You can record conversations and the live transcription function will write up the conversation for you and is also searchable.

Really useful as a fieldwork tool to help with transcribing interviews or supervision meetings. Ideal for use in group work as well as note taking and as a planning tool or a way of creating revision resources.

Cost? Free options with premium/subscription options available depending on your needs.

ClaroRead

What does it do?

Reads text out loud and enables you to change the screen background colour to reduce screen glare.

What can I use it for?

Can be used to help process written information by listening as well as reading on screen, also useful for proofreading. Changing the background colour may make it easier on the eyes to read large volumes of text.

Cost? Installed on all QMUL computers, so free to use on campus! Premium version available to download onto a personal laptop.

What does it do?

It reads text on your screen out loud.

What can I use it for?

It is a great tool for proofreading essays and written work as it is always easier to hear if something doesn’t sound quite right or if there is a typo. If you prefer listening to podcasts or audio books you may find using this to read journal articles or other text a much more efficient way of reading.

Cost? Free! Premium subscription available.

Mendeley

What does it do?

It allows you to create a library of sources from online texts and import documents from your computer.  Citations and a bibliography can be inserted into work with a few clicks.  It provides references in a number of formats including Harvard, APA, Vancouver and OSCOLA.

You can also search for scientific research papers and receive personalised recommendations.

There is an added perk of being able to search for jobs in the science, technology and health fields.

What can I use it for?

You can to search for, collect, organise and cite research and build your own personal library for essay writing or learning.

The additional function of PDF annotating means that you can sticky notes and information, so no more printing out piles of journal articles to make notes on!

Zotero

What does it do?

This programme allows you to find details of sources (title, publication date, author etc) simply through typing in an ISBN, DOI or PMID search or saving directly from your web browser. You can collate a source library for each assignment and then insert citations and/or a bibliography into your work with a few clicks.  It provides references in a number of formats including Harvard, APA, Vancouver and OSCOLA.

You can sync it across all your devices so you can keep all your resources organised and in one place.

What can I use it for?

You can very easily collect, organise and cite research in your essays with a couple of clicks. The best feature is the bibliography creator; once you have finished your essay, with a couple of clicks, you can insert all the references you’ve used in alphabetical order using the style of referencing you have selected, easy! No more searching through your work to make sure you have included all your references and manually typing them all out.
